Until 2020, we taught only local students, but when the world went online, we did too – and honestly, we LOVE it. The freedom to work with students all over the country, and bring in the best instructors from everywhere? It’s been pretty amazing.

At Sense & Color, we don’t just want students to play music, but to love music! Our owner and instructors are professional working musicians who are constantly pushing their own musical horizons, and we work to find the right balance of discipline, fun, and musical inspiration in every lesson. Gauging by the number of our past students who now play in their own bands and musical groups, we think it works!

Our History

Feature article in the Cedar Park Community Impact newspaper, 2013Born in Houston, TX, school owner Amy Boyd moved to the live music capital of the world in 1991, graduated from the University of Texas at Austin, and bought her first home in Cedar Park in 1998. (Remember when the only things out here were an Albertson’s and a Blockbuster Video?)

In 2008, Amy and her husband, music teacher extraordinaire Michael Boyd, offered guitar, bass, and voice lessons out of their spare bedroom, while parents hung out in the living room, and the cats made themselves comfy in students’ guitar cases. Over the next two years, as word-of-mouth grew and more students came, they brought in more teachers. It was soon clear they’d either need a separate school, or a much bigger house! In June of 2012, Mike & Amy downgraded to a smaller home in Buttercup Creek and used the extra monthly savings to move the school into its commercial location in the heart of Cedar Park.

Over the years, we built out new teaching rooms, upgraded every bit of the interior, expanded to fifteen instruments and twelve music teachers, and started our year-round student rock band program.

We’ve been featured twice in the Community Impact newspaper as the Cedar Park Business of the Month, and we’ve been a sponsor of several local CP churches, the Vista Ridge HS Theater Program, and the Henry MS Band, as well as played numerous LISD school festivals and community events.

In the past few years, the number of music schools in Cedar Park has tripled, and while some of them may be shinier than we are on the outside, we’re proud to be an original Cedar Park institution and still growing. Our location is off the beaten path, so community outreach and word-of-mouth is everything to us!
