Originally from Houston, TX, Chris Turvill has extensive experience teaching guitar, bass, ukulele, and songwriting. Prior to Sense & Color, Chris taught guitar lessons and rock band classes in various afterschool programs in California and Texas, including Boys and Girls Club of Napa, Instrumental Music for Children in Walnut Creek, and the Austin Independent School District.
His musical education began with piano lessons in elementary school and continued with guitar lessons in middle school. By high school, he was attending jazz workshops as a bassist, and during his college years in Austin, he began writing and recording his own experimental rock compositions, which he continues to do currently as Quasar Cycles, a genre-bending guitar/bass loop project.
Since college, Chris has continued to expand his musical knowledge, including a week-long course with Robert Fripp’s Guitar Circle to learn how physical disciplines like Tai Chi can benefit performance, and training in the Suzuki Guitar Method, which gives young beginners a strong technical foundation in classical guitar.
Chris is currently developing a new program called Arcadstra, combining Suzuki methods with classic Nintendo game themes, delighting kids who might not otherwise develop an interest in classical guitar.
Chris truly enjoys helping students follow the paths of their favorite players while helping them find their own voice. His specialties are tremolo flatpicking, slap bass, and songwriting.
With his kind and patient nature, Chris is well-loved by students of all ages.
