Born in Uganda and now based in Austin, singer-songwriter and vocal coach Jonathan Mukhwana brings a global perspective to his teaching, blending African and Western musical traditions with an emphasis on storytelling, expression, and confidence.
Jon considers teaching an extension of his own musical journey, and loves helping students discover their voices – not just technically, but emotionally and creatively. In lessons, he focuses on the physical nature of singing and building strong vocal foundations while encouraging students to listen deeply, take creative risks, and sing with intention. Jon welcomes students of all ages and skill levels!
This is a rare opportunity for students in Leander to learn directly from an artist who’s actively performing, recording, and sharing music on an international stage. Since moving to the States, Jon has opened for artists such as Billy Joel, Norah Jones, and Corinne Bailey-Rae, among others, and he brings those real-world experiences into the lesson room in a way that feels accessible, inspiring, and grounded.
Whether a student is just beginning their musical journey or looking to grow as a vocalist and songwriter, Jon’s supportive, encouraging teaching style helps students feel seen, capable, and excited to keep learning. His lessons emphasize not only how to sing, but why we sing.
